SUMMARY:All Things Owl in New England Habitats Photography Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The McLane Center presents the photography of Howard S. Muscott\, visible during open hours (Tues-Fri 11am-5pm)\, July 1 through August 31\, 2022. \nSpecial Exhibition Opening Thursday July 7th\, 2022.  4-6 PM \nAccording to Howard\, “Owls have always fascinated me and I’ve spent hours trying to find\, photograph and experience their presence.  Fortunately\, New England in general\, and New Hampshire in particular\, have excellent habitat for these magnificent creatures in every season. Whether indigenous to New England like the Barred and Screech Owl\, or Winter visitors from the North like the Snowy\, Short-eared\, or Great Grey\, Owls are beautiful to photograph in New England environments. In All Things Owl\, I try to immerse the viewer in images of these mighty birds of prey within local natural habitats on dunes\, in forests\, and in the sky.  My hope is that the images encourage a personal connection to one of nature’s most beautiful and intelligent raptors\, inspiring one to want to treasure and protect them as much as I do.” \nHoward Muscott has photographed nature\, landscapes and wildlife for more than 45 years.  Grounded in his early years of hiking\, backpacking\, and mountain climbing\, Howard’s love for nature photography is fueled by the exquisite beauty of the natural world and the wildlife residing within their various landscapes.  “The ideal photograph tells a story that speaks directly and profoundly to the heart while moving the mind to self-reflection and advocacy.” \nSelf-taught\, Howard has had more than 40 individual and 60 group shows highlighting among other things Nature\, Autumn\, Southwestern Peoples and Light\, the Mountains of Alaska\, Colorado and the Pacific Northwest\, Owls\, Costa Rica\, and Kenya.  Howard’s work has been published on the cover of national journals in education\, in newspapers and books\, and used on educational and other websites. \nwww.chasingthegoldenlight.com

SUMMARY:Kayak Hampton and Seabrook Marshes
DESCRIPTION:Join Scott Heron as he leads a Seacoast Chapter trip paddling through Hampton and Seabrook’s estuary searching for a variety of bird life across tidal streams\, mudflats\, saltwater marshes and beach dunes. We’ll be looking for species of herons\, gulls\, terns\, shorebirds\, raptors\, swallows\, and other avian and marine life as we ride the falling tide. Meet at Harborside Park along Route 1A in Seabrook at 6am. Sunrise is at 5:57am and low tide is at 6:32am. Be mindful of best practices for boating safety. A kayak is preferred and a canoe can be used as well\, but may be more difficult to navigate. At times\, we’ll be travelling through very shallow water and mild currents. The trip is planned to take three hours. \nThis field trip will be limited to 15 participants. Visit the Seacoast Chapter site for more information and to sign-up. \nContact: Scott Heron

SUMMARY:Astronomy Talk and Viewing
DESCRIPTION:Red Barn Series\, Newfound Audubon\nNo registration necessary – just come and join us! \nSpeaker: John Bishop\, New Hampshire Astronomical Society \nWhen we look up at the night sky on a clear night\, we see points of light with varied color and brightness. We know that the light has reached us across the vastness of space\, but just how far has it traveled? And how do we know that? Astronomers have the cosmic distance ladder to measure farther and farther away from us\, using different methods to cover greater and greater distances. \nJoin John Bishop of the New Hampshire Astronomical Society as he describes the distance ladder and also opens a window into the August night sky. After his presentation in the Red Barn\, head outside with John for a Sky Watch. \nPlease park across the street at Ash Cottage. Download a map here. Note that this is now a private residence and there is no bathroom access. \nSpecial thanks to our 2022 Red Barn Series sponsor\, the Hebron Conservation Commission; and to our co-host\, the Newfound Lake Region Association.\n \nPhoto: The moon and Venus (NASA photo).

SUMMARY:Buds & Blooms: Bee-Friending Our Native Pollinators
DESCRIPTION:Discover the unique and specialized native insects that play a critical role in both ecosystems and agriculture. They may be small\, but they are mighty\, and they come in more patterns than stripes alone! Let’s peruse the garden in search of the diverse array of invertebrates frequenting our native flowers and see how many we can “spot” while observing their behavior. An insect craft will conclude our program once we’ve ensured we’ve all become apprentice entomologists!   \nIntended for kids and families\, the Buds & Blooms Series is a compilation of five in-person public programs intended to introduce participants to the magic and wonder of our native plants and pollinators. Occurring monthly through October\, each program highlights a topic pertaining to pollinators and includes an interactive activity as well as a take away. Parental supervision is required and content/material is best suited for children ages 4-12. \nThis program is free of cost\, but RSVP’s are required to reserve your spot. \nPhoto Credit: Pixabay

SUMMARY:Buds & Blooms: Pollination - Rescheduled from July 16 to Aug 18
DESCRIPTION:This session has been rescheduled from its original date of July 16 to the new date of August 18\, 2022. \nEntomophilous. Entemo-what? Derived from the Greek word “éntomon\,” meaning insect\, entomophilous pollination refers to plants that require insects for their pollination needs. Let’s wander around the McLane Center’s gardens as we search for our fluttery\, fuzzy\, and buzzy pollinator pals after first learning some basics about the process of pollination through a skit and a game.  \nIntended for kids and families\, the Buds & Blooms Series is a compilation of five in-person public programs intended to introduce participants to the magic and wonder of our native plants and pollinators. SUMMARY:Climate Change and Coastal Carnivores: Rising Water and Changing Habitat
DESCRIPTION:Red Barn Series\, Newfound Audubon\nNo registration necessary – just come and join us! \nSpeaker: Mirka Zapletal\, Newfound Lake Region Association \nIn New Hampshire we hear that climate change is bringing us heat waves\, heavy rain storms\, and earlier springs. And it’s not just humans who will be affected- New Hampshire wildlife populations may have to adjust to these new conditions or disappear. How will climate change impact some of these same species in coastal areas along the Gulf of Mexico where land loss is an additional issue? Conservation ecologist Mirka Zapletal will share her research on coastal carnivores in Louisiana\, such as coyotes and otters\, and rodents with similar roles in the ecosystem. Future models of Louisiana’s coast suggest dramatically altered landscapes going forward and that could have huge impacts on where these species are found. \nPlease park across the street at Ash Cottage. Download a map here. Note that this is now a private residence and there is no bathroom access. \nMirka recently earned her doctorate from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette where she did this research. She’s now the Education & Outreach Manager for the Newfound Lake Region Association where her work focuses on getting people outside to experience the Newfound Watershed and conservation work in new ways.\n \nSpecial thanks to our 2022 Red Barn Series sponsor\, the Hebron Conservation Commission; and to our co-host\, the Newfound Lake Region Association.\n \nPhoto: Mirka in the field (courtesy photo).

SUMMARY:Dragons and Damsels of NH
DESCRIPTION:Red Barn Series\, Newfound Audubon\nNo registration necessary – just come and join us! \nSpeaker: Dr. Pam Hunt\, NH Audubon \nWelcome to the fascinating world of the insect order Odonata! You may be familiar with the dragonflies buzzing over your yard in the summer\, or the damselflies that land on your kayak\, but what do you REALLY know about these ancient insects? This program provides an overview of the biology and ecology of dragonflies and damselflies\, from their amazing life cycle (content alert: some pretty crazy reproductive behavior is involved!) to their incredible diversity. It also highlights a few of NH’s notable species and their stories\, and closes with some results from the “NH Dragonfly Survey\,” a five year volunteer-based project that documented the distribution of these insects across the state. \nPlease park across the street at Ash Cottage. Download a map here. Note that this is now a private residence and there is no bathroom access. \nSpecial thanks to our 2022 Red Barn Series sponsor\, the Hebron Conservation Commission; and to our co-host\, the Newfound Lake Region Association.\n \nPhoto: Dragonfly (Pam Hunt).
