DESCRIPTION:Join NH Audubon for a birding walk along the trails at Massabesic Center in Auburn. \nThis is an informal birding walk that begins at MAC and explores the trails with local birder\, Joe Mahoney. All ages and skill levels of birders are welcome. If you are new to birding\, come and learn the basics! DESCRIPTION:Date: November 16th\, 5:00pm-6:30pm \nPrice: $12 for members\, $15 for non-members \nJoin local nature photographer\, Tracy Brunner\, at the Massabesic Center for a night sky photo shoot near Massabesic Lake. The walk will start at the Center and continue to nearby trails to photograph the beautiful night sky. During the workshop\, Tracy will discuss tips for getting the most out of your night sky photographs\, will provide suggestions for camera settings and creative compositions\, and answer your photography questions. SUMMARY:Saving a Species from Extinction\, Protecting the North Atlantic Right Whale
DESCRIPTION:Join the New Hampshire Audubon Seacoast Chapter for their in person November program. \nWith fewer than 350 whales remaining\, the North Atlantic right whale is one of the rarest large whale species in the world. Once a heavily targeted commercial whaling species\, right whales remain vulnerable to contemporary human activities\, including vessel strikes and entanglement in fishing gear. Their recovery is also threatened by low reproduction\, habitat loss\, disease and environmental contaminants. For more than 40 years\, the New England Aquarium has been in the forefront of right whale research and conservation efforts and our work has been integral to informing national and international efforts to protect these elusive giants. This program presented by Heather Pettis will share the history of this iconic species as well as the tremendous efforts underway to save them from extinction. \nThe Seacoast Chapter meets monthly on the second Wednesday except the months of July and August unless there is a special program. Refreshments are served at 7 pm and the meetings begin at 7:30 pm unless otherwise noted (entrance doors locked at 7:45 pm). The public is welcome free of charge. In person meetings are held at the Seacoast Science Center at Odiorne State Park\, Route 1A\, Rye\, NH. Wheelchair accessible. On this guided walk you will learn how to identify numerous species of shrubs and trees in winter using visual clues other than just leaves – clues such as shape\, branching patterns\, buds\, bark\, smell\, taste\, habitat\, cones\, and fruits. The ability to identify trees and shrubs by their bark\, twigs and buds is a very useful skill for anyone who spends time in the woods. Along the way we can discuss forest ecology\, tree disorders\, wildlife habitats\, invasive species\, or other questions that you have about New Hampshire’s forests. \nCo-sponsored by UNH Cooperative Extension. \nThe University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension is an equal opportunity educator and employer. DESCRIPTION:Join NH Audubon for a birding walk along the trails at Massabesic Center in Auburn. \nThis is an informal birding walk that begins at MAC and explores the trails with local birder\, Joe Mahoney. All ages and skill levels of birders are welcome. If you are new to birding\, come and learn the basics! If you are an avid birder\, come to learn new techniques\, network with other birders\, or share your expertise with the group. \nBinocular rental included with ticket. Please dress for the weather. DESCRIPTION:How do you move an acre of plastic and plant an acre of native seeds? With little wind (hopefully)\, plenty of sun and lots of hands. \nPollinator Meadow Volunteer Request:  Plastic Removal\, Plastic Movement\, and Seed and Straw Spreading \nWednesday\, 2 November 2022\, 12-4pm \nRain Date: Friday\,  (Need dry weather for seed spreading): 4 November 2022 \n(Go\No Go will be sent out on Tuesday afternoon based on weather). \nActivities include: \n\nRemoval and movement of rocks and timbers to keep plastic down\nPulling of weeds which grew between the plastic\nMoving and securing plastic in new areas or folding it for storage and use elsewhere\nRaking out area to be seeded and removing roots\, litter\, and duff\nSpreading new native seed and sand mixture\nRolling and pressing in seeds for germination (soil compaction)\nSpreading straw\nDo the native seed germination dance 🙂\n\nIf you are interested and can attend either the day planned or the rain day\, please email T. Parker Schuerman. \nWhy a pollinator meadow? The demonstration pollinator meadow engages and educates local community members and collaborators in site preparation\, seeding\, and the ongoing maintenance of accessible fields planted with native grasses and wildflowers.  Bees and other pollinators are essential components of NH’s agricultural systems and natural ecosystems. These species rely on abundant sources of pollen and nectar for survival. By planting bee gardens and flowering meadows\, we can help support this critical natural resource. Workshops for landowners to learn about the mechanics of successfully establishing pollinator habitat on their property are planned and monitoring for pollinator usage of the meadows will engage citizen scientists of all ages.
