DESCRIPTION:A Season in the Sun: Photographs from the Massabesic Center’s Demonstration Garden by Walt Swist \nWalt Swist photos from the NH Audubon Massabesic Center’s Demonstration Gardens.\nTake a photographic journey with Walt Swist through the 2024 season in the NH Audubon Massabesic Center’s Demonstration Gardens! Experience the magical pollinator gardens in full bloom and the amazing bounty of the vegetable and herb gardens\, with side tours of the wedding garden\, the barn garden\, the bird-friendly gardens\, the memorial garden\, the rain garden\, the wildflower garden\, the garden for the senses\, and more. These gardens present opportunities for home and community gardeners to observe and learn best practices in a beautiful natural setting. \nAs an additional benefit\, we donate most of our fresh vegetables and herbs to the Families in Transition Food Pantry and Dining Services in Manchester. We also provide vegetables for our favorite Animal Ambassadors who reside at the Massabesic Center. In 2024 we harvested about 543 pounds of vegetables and herbs. \nSome of these photos are simple direct views of the harvest in the field\, with vegetables and herbs dutifully lining up to be weighed and counted. In other photos the vegetables\, herbs and flowers take center stage to tell their own unique stories\, often revealing whimsical individual personalities and sharing the secret joys of life of the garden. \nThis exhibit is a departure from our typical showroom gallery\, and will be displayed in our main hall\, which will be fully accessible during standard Massabesic Center hours Wednesdays to Saturdays from 11am to 5pm. \nBio: Walt is a volunteer with the UNH Extension Master Gardener program and a resident of Manchester\, New Hampshire. He is also a NH Audubon volunteer in the demonstration gardens at the Massabesic Center in Auburn\, where he helps grow and harvest produce in the vegetable and herb gardens. He enjoys photographing the diversity and beauty of the natural world enhanced with an occasional dash of whimsical storytelling.

SUMMARY:Birding Outing at Hebron Marsh
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a birding outing at Hebron Marsh! This walk will go through the trails of Hebron Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary consists mostly of grassland on the edge of mixed forest with views of the northwest corner of Newfound Lake. Birds seen here previously include Red-eyed Vireo\, Canada Goose\, and Eastern Bluebird. \nThis is an informal birding outing that begins in front of NH Audubon’s Ash Cottage and explores the trails with Newfound Center staff. All ages and skill levels of birders are welcome. If you are new to birding\, come and learn the basics! If you are an avid birder\, come to learn new techniques\, network with other birders\, or share your expertise with the group. \nThis is a free event. Binocular rental is provided. Please dress for the weather\, with sturdy shoes. Expect to walk between 1-2 miles with some elevation change through grassy terrain. Parking is available on the shoulders in front of Ash Cottage (50 N Shore Rd.\, Hebron). Trails may be soggy or muddy. Dogs are not allowed on this walk. DESCRIPTION:July 22\, 2025 \nDragons & Damsels of New Hampshire \nDr. Pam Hunt (NH Audubon) \nWelcome to the fascinating world of the insect order Odonata! You may be familiar with the dragonflies buzzing over your yard in the summer\, or the damselflies that land on your kayak\, but what do you REALLY know about these ancient insects? This program provides an overview of the biology and ecology of dragonflies and damselflies\, from their amazing life cycle (content alert: some pretty crazy reproductive behavior is involved!) to their incredible diversity. It also highlights a few of NH’s notable species and their stories\, and closes with some results from the “NH Dragonfly Survey\,” a five-year volunteer-based project that documented the distribution of these insects across the state. \nHeld on Tuesdays\, 7:00–8:15 pm\nJoin us for our Newfound Nature Series (the new name for our beloved Red Barn Speaker Series) on Tuesday evenings. The series is now held at Grey Rocks and co-hosted by the Newfound Lake Region Association (NLRA). DESCRIPTION:Join us to look for birds at Piscataquog River Park in Manchester! This outing will be led by local birder and Massabesic Center Advisory Committee member\, Joe Mahoney\, and will focus on our wildlife refuge’s summer residents. This walk will cross through mostly forest and river habitats\, and we can expect to see birds such as Gray Catbirds\, Mallards\, and Red-Tailed Hawks. \nThis is a free event with binocular rentals available. Please dress for the weather\, with sturdy shoes. Expect to walk between 1-2 miles over mostly flat trails through wooded terrain. Trails may be muddy and uneven. Dogs are not allowed on this walk. SUMMARY:NH Butterfly Monitoring Network Capital Region Butterfly Count
DESCRIPTION:Join fellow butterfly enthusiasts on July 26th for a fun day of butterfly counting! This annual community science event takes place at over 450 sites across North America\, including seven right here in New Hampshire. Each count focuses on a 15-mile diameter circle officially registered with the North American Butterfly Association. \nThese counts need a certain number of participants to happen\, so your help is essential! Whether you’re an expert or just curious\, there’s a role for everyone. You might help navigate to different observation spots\, assist with species identification\, snap photos for post-event verification\, or record data for your team. No experience necessary. Signing up ahead of time helps us to develop the teams and plan our field trip locations. \nTakes place July 26\, 2025\, (with a rain date of July 27\, 2025) between 9-4pm\, with more detailed information shared upon registration. We are based out of the McLane Center\, and the day will be spent in the field in different locations throughout the Concord area. DESCRIPTION:July 29\, 2025 \nUsing Wildlife Cameras for Classroom Science  \nDr. Mirka Zapletal (Newfound Lake Region Association) \nDuring the 2024-2025 school year\, the Newfound Lake Region Association worked with the Newfound Area School District and other community organizations to give students direct experience with wildlife research. By setting out pairs of wildlife cameras at sites around the watershed in spring\, summer\, and fall and then cataloging the images that were captured\, students helped NLRA gather data on local wildlife species and contributed to field research. There were surprises\, disappointments\, and some challenging graphs\, and students had a chance to look at local habitats and wildlife in a new way. \nHeld on Tuesdays\, 7:00–8:15 pm\nJoin us for our Newfound Nature Series (the new name for our beloved Red Barn Speaker Series) on Tuesday evenings. The series is now held at Grey Rocks and co-hosted by the Newfound Lake Region Association (NLRA). SUMMARY:Ode to the Birdhouse Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Visit the McLane Center 7/2-8/23 to see the Ode to the Birdhouse series by Pam Tarbell. \n“I have always been fascinated with birds as I looked out the windows as a child. Now\, I watch the local bird population plus the migrating fowl and hawks\, which continues to fascinate me. \nAs an artist\, I listen to music while painting\, which helps to create movement in my art. I made the simple shape of a birdhouse\, several patterns of birds\, and then added leaves to create a complex overlapping of colorful designs. Several of my paintings became visual puzzles for the eye as birds are camouflaged in their environment.” \nExamples from the Ode to the Birdhouse exhibit\,\nBio: A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design and a United States Art Embassy Artist. Tarbell exhibits nationally\, and in 2023 had a solo exhibit at the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University. In 2024\, she was commissioned to paint the awards for the New Hampshire Committee for the Arts Gala Awards Celebration. She just concluded a solo exhibit at the Mass Audubon in Belmont\, MA. \nShe has served on numerous boards and committees advocating for the arts in New Hampshire. DESCRIPTION:A Season in the Sun: Photographs from the Massabesic Center’s Demonstration Garden by Walt Swist \nWalt Swist photos from the NH Audubon Massabesic Center’s Demonstration Gardens.\nTake a photographic journey with Walt Swist through the 2024 season in the NH Audubon Massabesic Center’s Demonstration Gardens! Experience the magical pollinator gardens in full bloom and the amazing bounty of the vegetable and herb gardens\, with side tours of the wedding garden\, the barn garden\, the bird-friendly gardens\, the memorial garden\, the rain garden\, the wildflower garden\, the garden for the senses\, and more. These gardens present opportunities for home and community gardeners to observe and learn best practices in a beautiful natural setting. \nAs an additional benefit\, we donate most of our fresh vegetables and herbs to the Families in Transition Food Pantry and Dining Services in Manchester. We also provide vegetables for our favorite Animal Ambassadors who reside at the Massabesic Center. In 2024 we harvested about 543 pounds of vegetables and herbs. \nSome of these photos are simple direct views of the harvest in the field\, with vegetables and herbs dutifully lining up to be weighed and counted. In other photos the vegetables\, herbs and flowers take center stage to tell their own unique stories\, often revealing whimsical individual personalities and sharing the secret joys of life of the garden. \nThis exhibit is a departure from our typical showroom gallery\, and will be displayed in our main hall\, which will be fully accessible during standard Massabesic Center hours Wednesdays to Saturdays from 11am to 5pm. \nBio: Walt is a volunteer with the UNH Extension Master Gardener program and a resident of Manchester\, New Hampshire. He is also a NH Audubon volunteer in the demonstration gardens at the Massabesic Center in Auburn\, where he helps grow and harvest produce in the vegetable and herb gardens. He enjoys photographing the diversity and beauty of the natural world enhanced with an occasional dash of whimsical storytelling.
