SUMMARY:All Things Owl in New England Habitats Photography Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The McLane Center presents the photography of Howard S. Muscott\, visible during open hours (Tues-Fri 11am-5pm)\, July 1 through August 31\, 2022. \nSpecial Exhibition Opening Thursday July 7th\, 2022.  4-6 PM \nAccording to Howard\, “Owls have always fascinated me and I’ve spent hours trying to find\, photograph and experience their presence.  Fortunately\, New England in general\, and New Hampshire in particular\, have excellent habitat for these magnificent creatures in every season. Whether indigenous to New England like the Barred and Screech Owl\, or Winter visitors from the North like the Snowy\, Short-eared\, or Great Grey\, Owls are beautiful to photograph in New England environments. In All Things Owl\, I try to immerse the viewer in images of these mighty birds of prey within local natural habitats on dunes\, in forests\, and in the sky.  My hope is that the images encourage a personal connection to one of nature’s most beautiful and intelligent raptors\, inspiring one to want to treasure and protect them as much as I do.” \nHoward Muscott has photographed nature\, landscapes and wildlife for more than 45 years.  Grounded in his early years of hiking\, backpacking\, and mountain climbing\, Howard’s love for nature photography is fueled by the exquisite beauty of the natural world and the wildlife residing within their various landscapes.  “The ideal photograph tells a story that speaks directly and profoundly to the heart while moving the mind to self-reflection and advocacy.” \nSelf-taught\, Howard has had more than 40 individual and 60 group shows highlighting among other things Nature\, Autumn\, Southwestern Peoples and Light\, the Mountains of Alaska\, Colorado and the Pacific Northwest\, Owls\, Costa Rica\, and Kenya.  Howard’s work has been published on the cover of national journals in education\, in newspapers and books\, and used on educational and other websites. \nwww.chasingthegoldenlight.com

SUMMARY:Dragons and Damsels of NH
DESCRIPTION:Red Barn Series\, Newfound Audubon\nNo registration necessary – just come and join us! \nSpeaker: Dr. Pam Hunt\, NH Audubon \nWelcome to the fascinating world of the insect order Odonata! You may be familiar with the dragonflies buzzing over your yard in the summer\, or the damselflies that land on your kayak\, but what do you REALLY know about these ancient insects? This program provides an overview of the biology and ecology of dragonflies and damselflies\, from their amazing life cycle (content alert: some pretty crazy reproductive behavior is involved!) to their incredible diversity. It also highlights a few of NH’s notable species and their stories\, and closes with some results from the “NH Dragonfly Survey\,” a five year volunteer-based project that documented the distribution of these insects across the state. \nPlease park across the street at Ash Cottage. Download a map here. Note that this is now a private residence and there is no bathroom access. \nSpecial thanks to our 2022 Red Barn Series sponsor\, the Hebron Conservation Commission; and to our co-host\, the Newfound Lake Region Association.\n \nPhoto: Dragonfly (Pam Hunt).

SUMMARY:Tracking New Hampshire’s Endangered Northern Harriers
DESCRIPTION:Red Barn Series\, Newfound Audubon\nNo registration necessary – just come and join us! \nSpeaker: Chris Martin\, Senior Biologist\, NH Audubon \nWith slender dihedral wings and a rudder-like tail\, a Northern Harrier glides low over fields and marshes in search of prey. Look away\, and it might vanish into tall grass or behind a stone wall. Literally and figuratively flying under the radar for several decades\, is New Hampshire’s declining harrier breeding population also about to disappear? NH Fish & Game reclassified them as state-endangered in 2008\, and they are funding NH Audubon’s current efforts to monitor and manage these marsh hawks. Chris will discuss efforts to document what remains of NH’s breeding harrier population. \nPlease park across the street at Ash Cottage. Download a map here. Note that this is now a private residence and there is no bathroom access. \nChris Martin is a NH Audubon raptor biologist. For 32 years he has led recovery of the state’s Bald Eagles\, Ospreys\, and Peregrine Falcons\, in close collaboration with NH Fish & Game’s Nongame Wildlife Program. He recruits\, trains\, and supervises an enthusiastic corps of volunteer observers who monitor these species at sites scattered across the Granite State.\n \nSpecial thanks to our 2022 Red Barn Series sponsor\, the Hebron Conservation Commission; and to our co-host\, the Newfound Lake Region Association.\n \nPhoto: Chris Martin on Mt Washington (David Govatski).

SUMMARY:Loons on Lake Massabesic
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, July 8\, 6-7pm \nCost: Free \nFor many\, the haunting call of the loon is an important part of the New Hampshire lake experience. Often seen as a symbol of the northern wilderness\, loons are a beloved fixture on New Hampshire lakes\, and many lake goers enjoy watching them as they raise their young. However\, the breeding season can be a vulnerable time for loons—they face many threats\, both natural and anthropogenic\, while on our lakes. \nThis presentation by Caroline Hughes of the Loon Preservation Committee\, will focus on the biology and life history of loons\, the threats that loons face while on our lakes\, and the work that the Loon Preservation Committee’s staff and volunteers have performed since 1975 to help recover New Hampshire’s threatened loon population. \nWe will end with a discussion of the loons on Massabesic Lake\, the challenges that they have faced\, and the ways that program participants can assist with Massabesic loon monitoring. \nThis program is free of cost\, but participants must register in advance.  The presentation will take place indoors. \nStay up to date with the latest masking requirements by checking community Covid-19 transmission levels here. Our policies remain fluid in accordance with CDC guidelines. \nPhoto Credit: Kittie Wilson
