SUMMARY:Garden Insects - Environmentally Conscious Pest Management
DESCRIPTION:As a gardener committed to sustainable practices\, it can be difficult knowing which insects are beneficial to your garden and which are harmful\, let alone the best way to help your plants survive the onslaught.  To learn the most environmentally-conscious\, and effective\, ways of gardening with insects\, join us for an introduction to our six-legged friends and foes.  During this in-person workshop\, we’ll discuss the basics of insect taxonomy and anatomy\, the factors behind what makes a bug good or bad\, identification tips\, and a review of common species that you’re likely to encounter here in New Hampshire.  We’ll also discuss integrated pest management concepts\, with a focus on non-chemical practices\, to help lessen the impacts of pests you may encounter at home. \nThis presentation will include a 45-minute indoor lecture\, followed by a 45-minute excursion to the gardens to look for insects and their signs in the Demonstration Gardens. In the event of inclement weather\, the entire presentation will take place indoors. \nCome prepared for a short walk over flat\, uneven grassy terrain.  Sunscreen and bug-repellant (for the humans!) are recommended. \nFor accessibility accommodations\, please contact Massabesic Center Director\, Kimmie Whiteman\, at kwhiteman@nhaudubon.org. \nPresenter:\nKimmie Whiteman\, NH Audubon Massabesic Center Director \nCost:\n$10 for NH Audubon members and UNH-Extension Master Gardeners$15 for non-members (Join or renew your membership today! Not sure of your membership status? Email our member services department or call (603) 224-9909 x310.) \nREGISTER HERE \nRegistration Required by July 25\, 2023 \nThis program is brought to you through an ongoing partnership between New Hampshire Audubon and University of New Hampshire Extension’s Master Gardener Program. The Demonstration Gardens at NH Audubon’s Massabesic Center provide a place for sharing best practices in eco-friendly home and community gardening\, to benefit human health and well-being\, and wildlife habitat. \n

SUMMARY:Pollinator Meadow Volunteer Day
DESCRIPTION:How do you move an acre of plastic and plant an acre of native seeds? With little wind (hopefully)\, plenty of sun and lots of hands. \nPollinator Meadow Volunteer Request:  Plastic Removal\, Plastic Movement\, and Seed and Straw Spreading \nWednesday\, 2 November 2022\, 12-4pm \nRain Date: Friday\,  (Need dry weather for seed spreading): 4 November 2022 \n(Go\No Go will be sent out on Tuesday afternoon based on weather). \nActivities include: \n\nRemoval and movement of rocks and timbers to keep plastic down\nPulling of weeds which grew between the plastic\nMoving and securing plastic in new areas or folding it for storage and use elsewhere\nRaking out area to be seeded and removing roots\, litter\, and duff\nSpreading new native seed and sand mixture\nRolling and pressing in seeds for germination (soil compaction)\nSpreading straw\nDo the native seed germination dance 🙂\n\nIf you are interested and can attend either the day planned or the rain day\, please email T. Parker Schuerman. \nWhy a pollinator meadow? The demonstration pollinator meadow engages and educates local community members and collaborators in site preparation\, seeding\, and the ongoing maintenance of accessible fields planted with native grasses and wildflowers.  Bees and other pollinators are essential components of NH’s agricultural systems and natural ecosystems. These species rely on abundant sources of pollen and nectar for survival. By planting bee gardens and flowering meadows\, we can help support this critical natural resource. Workshops for landowners to learn about the mechanics of successfully establishing pollinator habitat on their property are planned and monitoring for pollinator usage of the meadows will engage citizen scientists of all ages.

We are looking to engage others to help us learn more about all that is living in our pollinator habitat. A BioBlitz is a community science effort where volunteers help find and record data on as many different species (plants\, animals\, insects\, fungi) within a designated location and time period. We are excited to have a number of local experts who will join us to lead participants as we explore the biodiversity on this site. \nSchedule \n9:30am: Introduction to the BioBlitz \n10:00-11:30am: Expert led field trips (choose one) \n\nEmma Erler\, Horticulturist for Squam Lakes Natural Science Center: Pollinator Plants\nHeidi Holman\, Wildlife Habitat Biologist for NH Fish and Game: Butterflies\nMike Thomas\, retired entomologist for USDA: Insect Pollinators\nPollinator Garden volunteers: Pollinator Garden\nIndividual exploration\n\n11:30-12:30: Break \n12:30-2:00 Expert led field trips \n\nSame as above\n\n2:30: Wrap-up \nShare out our findings \n*also\, the Nature Store will be open! \nRegistration is required for this free event (group numbers will be limited with each expert). Please use this link to register and sign up for your field trip of choice for the morning and afternoon sessions. \nIf you are able\, please join Conservation Program Director Marc Nutter for a short presentation covering the history and value of the iNaturalist community science platform on Thursday June\, 16 at 7pm. He will lead us through the process of creating an account and submitting observations using your mobile device. He will also go over how to be involved in our BioBlitz and what to expect. \nIf you have already made an iNaturalist account to join us on 6/25\, please join this project to submit your observations for our BioBlitz total. \nSome useful links to review before the presentation: \n\nCreating an iNaturalist Account\nGeneral iNaturalist Help Page\nHow to Make an Observation (Video)\nHow to Take Identifiable Photos (Video)

SUMMARY:20th Annual Migratory Bird Day Walk at Pondicherry
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday May 17\, 2022 \nExplore Pondicherry Wildlife Sanctuary with Friends of Pondicherry! Join us for a Migratory Bird Day Walk at the Pondicherry National Wildlife Refuge. We will meet at the overlook at Airport Marsh on Airport Road in Whitefield at 7am to look for waterfowl and grassland birds. We expect to see Bobolinks\, Savanah Sparrows\, and several warbler species. At around 8am\, we will drive over to the Pondicherry Trailhead at 289 Airport Road and bird the 1.5 miles to Cherry Pond. At Cherry Pond\, we will take a side trip to Moorhen Marsh for Marsh Wrens. We will also bird the Little Cherry Pond Trail looking for Black-backed Woodpeckers and Cape May Warblers. On a good day at this time of year\, we can expect to see up to 20 species of warblers and 80 or more total species. We will finish the hike by mid-afternoon\, although you are welcome to stay as long as you like. \nThe walk is free\, and we will have free 2022 migratory bird day posters available. This year’s theme is Light Pollution and how it affects birds and other wildlife. The total walking distance will be 3-5 miles depending on the side trips you take from Cherry Pond. Most walking will be on a flat rail trail or the easy and flat Little Cherry Pond Trail. \nBring binoculars\, water\, lunch\, and clothing for the weather\, and be prepared for black flies. We will have experienced birders assist with this walk. \nIf you have questions or want to let me know that you are joining us\, contact me at David.Govatski@gmail.com \nWe hope to see you on Tuesday\, 17 May 2022\, at Pondicherry. \nDavid Govatski \nFriends of Pondicherry
