SUMMARY:Professional Development - Back to School Gardening\, Part 1
DESCRIPTION:PART 1 HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED TO ZOOM \nJoin Richard Hodges from ReTreeUs for a two-part workshop to discover a novel way to grow schoolyard gardens. In these workshops\, we’ll talk about sheet mulching techniques\, succession planting\, and building organic matter with an easy-to-do method. You’ll also learn the basic considerations and steps for planning and starting a schoolyard vegetable garden. \nIn Part 1 of the workshop\, we’ll get hands-on (virtually) with the “sheet mulching” practice we utilize in school gardens in the spring to prevent weeds and build soil. We will learn about direct-sowing crops that grow well over the summer with minimal maintenance while discussing best practices for school gardens. \nAfter the workshop\, we’ll provide information for you to tour the successful Teaching and Demonstration Garden\, which is maintained through a partnership between NH Audubon and UNH-Extension\, and provides the public with research-based\, sustainable gardening information and skills that benefit our environment for wildlife and for people. \nCost: $10 for NH Audubon members $15 for non-members (Join or renew your membership today! Not sure of your membership status? Email our member services department or call (603) 224-9909 x310.)  \nAdvance registration required for Part 1 by July 10th at 12pm. \nIf you will be also attending Part 2\, register via the Part 2 link. Your webinar access will be generated automatically\, free of charge.  Please don’t pay twice! \nAll ticket purchases will generate a printable ticket with a QR code. In-person check-in is done via sign-up list; please keep the printable ticket with QR code for your records.   \nZoom links will be sent to all virtual participants prior to the webinar. The link does not generate immediately\, so your patience is appreciated. Every effort will be made to record the presentation for registered attendees who miss the livestream.    \nPayPal Disclaimer:  \nOur ticket system utilizes NH Audubon’s PayPal account to facilitate sales. Registrants are not required to make a PayPal account to check out; a “guest” option is available. \nFor accessibility requests\, please contact Massabesic Center Director\, Kimmie Whiteman\, at kwhiteman@nhaudubon.org. \nDon’t forget to also sign up for Part 2 on August 30th\, 4:00pm – 6:00pm! \nPhoto: Image from ReTreeUs showing a healthy garden grown with sheet-mulching techniques. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Concord NH Butterfly Survey 2023
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our first annual NH Butterfly Survey! \nNew Hampshire Audubon is partnering with New Hampshire Fish and Game (NHFG) to collect long-term data on butterflies in the Concord region and beyond. Sightings will provide valuable data on how species ranges are changing over time. Your data will help support butterfly conservation across the state. \nNHFG and partners will go in the field to learn more about the butterflies that call New Hampshire home. Our series of online and field training sessions wrapped up and it’s time for the butterfly survey. All are welcome for this amazing opportunity to learn and participate in butterfly conservation. \nJoin us as we conduct the first annual Concord NH Butterfly Survey. These surveys are part of a nationwide effort to track butterflies through the North American Butterfly Association. These surveys provide insight into how habitat and weather changes affect butterfly populations. Together we can help track New Hampshire’s butterflies and make a difference in their conservation. \nMeet at McLane Center in Concord. \nQuestions? Please contact Diane De Luca.

SUMMARY:The State of New Hampshire’s Birds with Dr. Pamela Hunt
DESCRIPTION:In the last 50 years\, scientists estimate that North America has lost roughly 3 billion birds\, meaning that there are only three quarters as many birds around as there used to be. New Hampshire Audubon has been tracking bird populations for almost as long\, and in our “State of the Birds” report we present a summary of how birds are doing here in the Granite State. Almost 300 species occur regularly here\, and this report outlines general population trends\, major threats facing birds and their habitats\, and some of the conservation strategies that might help them recover. The bad news is that birds are declining here as well. The good news is that there are things we can do about it.  \nThis presentation is available in a hybrid format.  You are welcome to join us in-person at the Massabesic Center in Auburn\, or virtually via Zoom! Please indicate your preference in the ticket options below. \nThis program will take place rain or shine.  \nPresenter:\nDr. Pamela Hunt\, NH Audubon Senior Biologist for Avian Conservation  \nCost:\n$12 for NH Audubon members\n$15 for non-members (Join or renew your membership today! Not sure of your membership status? Email our member services department or call (603) 224-9909 x310.) \nRegistration Required by September 6\, 2023  \nAll ticket purchases will generate a printable ticket with a QR code. \nFor accessibility requests\, please contact Massabesic Center Director\, Kimmie Whiteman\, at kwhiteman@nhaudubon.org.  \nThe NH Audubon Scientist Series features our Senior Biologists sharing their research and data in monthly presentations at Massabesic Center during 2023.  \n

SUMMARY:Tracking the Signs of the Season: Exploring Phenology with Diane De Luca
DESCRIPTION:What do budding wildflowers\, metamorphosing frogs\, and migrating hawks have in common? They are all undergoing life cycle phases that can be affected by climate change. Have you ever made notes about the first peeper you heard calling\, the arrival of your first warbler\, or your first sighting of a mourning cloak butterfly? Then you have been monitoring phenology! Documenting stories in our own backyards contributes to the impacts of climate change. This online presentation will share a nationwide effort to monitor these life cycle events\, the phenology project at NH Audubon\, and opportunities for you to get involved.  \nThis presentation will take place virtually via Zoom. \nPresenter:\nDiane De Luca\, Senior Biologist \nCost:\n$12 for NH Audubon members\n$15 for non-members (Join or renew your membership today!
