SUMMARY:The People and the Peregrines Behind the Incredible Ongoing Recovery of Falcons in NH with Chris Martin
DESCRIPTION:Decades of restoration efforts now make it possible trace generations of Peregrines from successful nest sites across the state. Sightings of banded falcons reveal their NH lineages as populations increase. The Manchester falcon nest site that we can see in NH Audubon’s nest cam has produced 70 chicks so far and over half of them have been spotted elsewhere as adults. Hear stories of individual falcons and individual people who monitor them. Through photos\, join Chris on a climb to band chicks – how does he get into the ledges and crevasses to measure and document them year after year? \n“It’s the unsolved mysteries that are important to me now\,” says Chris. “I’m getting multiple sightings of a color banded falcon spotted in Hampton who is the grandson of a Manchester bird via the Newburyport\, Plum Island bridge. Where is he now? Did he move on from Hampton? Is he part of a new breeding pair somewhere\, continuing his lineage?” \nChris Martin has been a raptor biologist for NH Audubon for more than three decades. His work focuses on recovery of the state’s endangered and threatened raptors in close collaboration with NH Fish & Game. Our series of online training sessions wrapped up and now we will spend time in the field learning how to identify the butterflies in a diversity of habitats. All are welcome for this amazing opportunity to learn and participate in butterfly conservation. In these workshops\, we’ll talk about sheet mulching techniques\, succession planting\, and building organic matter with an easy-to-do method. You’ll also learn the basic considerations and steps for planning and starting a schoolyard vegetable garden. \nIn Part 1 of the workshop\, we’ll get hands-on (virtually) with the “sheet mulching” practice we utilize in school gardens in the spring to prevent weeds and build soil. SUMMARY:The State of New Hampshire’s Birds with Dr. Pamela Hunt
DESCRIPTION:In the last 50 years\, scientists estimate that North America has lost roughly 3 billion birds\, meaning that there are only three quarters as many birds around as there used to be. New Hampshire Audubon has been tracking bird populations for almost as long\, and in our “State of the Birds” report we present a summary of how birds are doing here in the Granite State. Almost 300 species occur regularly here\, and this report outlines general population trends\, major threats facing birds and their habitats\, and some of the conservation strategies that might help them recover. The bad news is that birds are declining here as well. DESCRIPTION:The Rusty Blackbird is a species of conservation concern that spends its entire life cycle in North America.  New Hampshire Audubon has been studying a breeding population of Rusty Blackbirds in northern New Hampshire and adjacent Maine since 2010.  This presentation presents basic natural history of the species and shares what we have learned during more than a decade of following these intriguing birds through northern swamps and softwood thickets.  \nThis presentation is available in a hybrid format.  You are welcome to join us in-person at the Massabesic Center in Auburn\, or virtually via Zoom!
