SUMMARY:NestWatch Volunteer Training: Bluebird Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:Learn about and get involved in a community science project to monitor field-nesting birds at NH Audubon’s Massabesic Center! This workshop focuses on Eastern Bluebirds and Tree Swallows and will teach you identification\, natural history\, conservation status and how to collect data as a NestWatch Monitor. \nWe will begin in the classroom at 10am with a break for lunch (please bring your own lunch and water). After lunch\, we’ll head outside for the last hour to learn the trails and nest box locations\, clean out residual nest materials from last year\, and practice field identification of early season birds. \nNH Audubon Massabesic Center is home to almost 80 monitored nest boxes. NestWatch Monitors are expected to contribute one to two hours each week from April to August to record data in their designated sections. \nWorkshop participants are not required to become NestWatch Monitors; you can learn the process and take your new skills with you anywhere! \nPresenters: \n\nLogan Young\, NH Audubon Massabesic Center NestWatch Chapter Coordinator\nBob Krewson\, NH Audubon Bluebird Monitor Volunteer Leader\n\nLogan and Bob were awarded the 2024 John Thalheimer Volunteer Award for their dedication to this project. Ask all of your pressing questions about your plants at home\, or find out how to get involved in gardening with NH Audubon and UNH Extension. \nAs an on-going partnership between New Hampshire Audubon and University of New Hampshire Extension’s Master Gardener Program\, the Demonstration Gardens provide a place for sharing best practices in eco-friendly home and community gardening\, which enhance human health and well-being and wildlife habitat.  \nDress for walking in the grass on flat but uneven terrain. Protect yourself against insects and the sun with long pants\, sleeves\, sunscreen\, and insect repellant. Gardeners will not be on site during inclement weather. \nBuilding hours are 11am to 5pm on Thursdays\, so plan accordingly. Visit the bathrooms\, gift shop\, and meet our animal ambassadors after you explore the gardens. SUMMARY:NestWatch Volunteer Training: Bluebird Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:Learn about and get involved in a community science project to monitor field-nesting birds at NH Audubon’s Massabesic Center!  This workshop focuses on Eastern Bluebirds\, and will teach you identification\, natural history\, conservation status and how to collect data as a Bluebird Trail Monitor.  \nWe will begin in the classroom at 10am with a break for lunch (please bring your own lunch and water). After lunch\, we’ll head outside for the last hour to learn the trails and nest box locations\, clean out residual nest materials from last year\, and practice field identification of early season birds. \nNH Audubon Massabesic Center is home to almost 100 monitored nest boxes. Volunteer monitors are expected to contribute one to two hours each week from April to August to record data in their designated sections. \nWorkshop participants are not required to become volunteer monitors; you can learn the process and take your new skills with you anywhere! \nPresenters:\nLogan Young\, NH Audubon Massabesic Center NestWatch Chapter Coordinator\nBob Krewson\, NH Audubon Bluebird Monitor Volunteer Leader \nCost:\nFree for NH Audubon members\n$5 for non-members \nRegistration Required by March 30\, 2023 \nIndoor presentation will take place indoors\, rain or shine.  Outdoor portion will take place unless there is severe weather. DESCRIPTION:How do you move an acre of plastic and plant an acre of native seeds? With little wind (hopefully)\, plenty of sun and lots of hands. \nPollinator Meadow Volunteer Request:  Plastic Removal\, Plastic Movement\, and Seed and Straw Spreading \nWednesday\, 2 November 2022\, 12-4pm \nRain Date: Friday\,  (Need dry weather for seed spreading): 4 November 2022 \n(Go\No Go will be sent out on Tuesday afternoon based on weather). \nActivities include: \n\nRemoval and movement of rocks and timbers to keep plastic down\nPulling of weeds which grew between the plastic\nMoving and securing plastic in new areas or folding it for storage and use elsewhere\nRaking out area to be seeded and removing roots\, litter\, and duff\nSpreading new native seed and sand mixture\nRolling and pressing in seeds for germination (soil compaction)\nSpreading straw\nDo the native seed germination dance 🙂\n\nIf you are interested and can attend either the day planned or the rain day\, please email T. Parker Schuerman. \nWhy a pollinator meadow? The demonstration pollinator meadow engages and educates local community members and collaborators in site preparation\, seeding\, and the ongoing maintenance of accessible fields planted with native grasses and wildflowers.  Bees and other pollinators are essential components of NH’s agricultural systems and natural ecosystems. These species rely on abundant sources of pollen and nectar for survival. By planting bee gardens and flowering meadows\, we can help support this critical natural resource. Workshops for landowners to learn about the mechanics of successfully establishing pollinator habitat on their property are planned and monitoring for pollinator usage of the meadows will engage citizen scientists of all ages.

SUMMARY:Loons on Lake Massabesic
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, July 8\, 6-7pm \nCost: Free \nFor many\, the haunting call of the loon is an important part of the New Hampshire lake experience. Often seen as a symbol of the northern wilderness\, loons are a beloved fixture on New Hampshire lakes\, and many lake goers enjoy watching them as they raise their young. However\, the breeding season can be a vulnerable time for loons—they face many threats\, both natural and anthropogenic\, while on our lakes. \nThis presentation by Caroline Hughes of the Loon Preservation Committee\, will focus on the biology and life history of loons\, the threats that loons face while on our lakes\, and the work that the Loon Preservation Committee’s staff and volunteers have performed since 1975 to help recover New Hampshire’s threatened loon population. \nWe will end with a discussion of the loons on Massabesic Lake\, the challenges that they have faced\, and the ways that program participants can assist with Massabesic loon monitoring. \nThis program is free of cost\, but participants must register in advance.  The presentation will take place indoors. \nStay up to date with the latest masking requirements by checking community Covid-19 transmission levels here. DESCRIPTION:Nighthawks were once common in cities throughout New Hampshire\, where they nested on gravel roofs and fed on insects attracted to city lights. In recent years\, these acrobatic birds have disappeared from many New Hampshire towns\, but they still nest in Keene\, Concord\, and a handful of other places in the Granite State. Help keep track of this charismatic endangered species by monitoring nighthawks this summer! To volunteer with Project Nighthawk\, attend this online training with Becky Suomala (NH Audubon) and Brett Amy Thelen (Harris Center).
