SUMMARY:Tips for Growing Tomatoes: Trellising\, Pruning and More
DESCRIPTION:Tomato season is coming into full swing! In this workshop\, we’ll discuss the differences between the two major growth habits of tomato varieties: determinate and indeterminate. Understanding these differences will determine how best to manage them. We’ll discuss and demonstrate different ways to support the plants for better production: staking\, caging\, overhead trellising\, and the “Florida Weave.” We’ll show how to prune tomatoes to control growth and improve disease prevention. \nInstructors: UNH Extension Master Gardeners Will Lowenthal and Maureen Sinclair \nLocation: Demonstration and Teaching Garden at NH Audubon’s Massabesic Center\, 26 Audubon Way\, Auburn.\nPre-registration required: https://extension.unh.edu/event/2022/07/tips-growing-tomatoes-trellising-pruning-more\n$15/person; $10/NHA member or Extension volunteer. \nRegistration deadline: Monday\, July 25\, 9:00 a.m.\nIf the event is sold out\, please email Jacob.Winn@unh.edu to be added to the waitlist \nTo request a reasonable accommodation\, please email ruth.smith@unh.edu or call 603-355-2718. \nThe Demonstration and Teaching Garden is a partnership program between UNH Extension and NH Audubon\, which provides the public with research-based\, sustainable gardening information and skills that benefit our environment for wildlife and for people.

SUMMARY:Loons on Lake Massabesic
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, July 8\, 6-7pm \nCost: Free \nFor many\, the haunting call of the loon is an important part of the New Hampshire lake experience. Often seen as a symbol of the northern wilderness\, loons are a beloved fixture on New Hampshire lakes\, and many lake goers enjoy watching them as they raise their young. However\, the breeding season can be a vulnerable time for loons—they face many threats\, both natural and anthropogenic\, while on our lakes. \nThis presentation by Caroline Hughes of the Loon Preservation Committee\, will focus on the biology and life history of loons\, the threats that loons face while on our lakes\, and the work that the Loon Preservation Committee’s staff and volunteers have performed since 1975 to help recover New Hampshire’s threatened loon population. \nWe will end with a discussion of the loons on Massabesic Lake\, the challenges that they have faced\, and the ways that program participants can assist with Massabesic loon monitoring. \nThis program is free of cost\, but participants must register in advance.  The presentation will take place indoors. \nStay up to date with the latest masking requirements by checking community Covid-19 transmission levels here. Our policies remain fluid in accordance with CDC guidelines. \nPhoto Credit: Kittie Wilson
