SUMMARY:NestWatch Volunteer Training: Bluebird Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:Learn about and get involved in a community science project to monitor field-nesting birds at NH Audubon’s Massabesic Center!  This workshop focuses on Eastern Bluebirds\, and will teach you identification\, natural history\, conservation status and how to collect data as a Bluebird Trail Monitor.  \nWe will begin in the classroom at 10am with a break for lunch (please bring your own lunch and water). After lunch\, we’ll head outside for the last hour to learn the trails and nest box locations\, clean out residual nest materials from last year\, and practice field identification of early season birds. \nNH Audubon Massabesic Center is home to almost 100 monitored nest boxes. SUMMARY:Seed Starting for Home Gardeners
DESCRIPTION:January 25\, 2023 6:30pm – 8:00pm \nAttendees will learn the benefits and best practices for starting plants indoors from seeds and cuttings. Participants will learn about requirements for successful germination\, different growing methods and mediums\, light and temperature needs\, overcoming common problems\, hardening off seedlings for transplanting into the garden\, and best practices to ensure seedlings successfully grow into healthy mature plants. \nThis workshop is designed for beginning gardeners or gardeners who are new to raising plants from seeds\, but all experience levels are welcome to join and learn. \nPresenter:\nSarah Marcoux has been a UNH Extension Master Gardener since 2016. She is an active member of the Master Gardener Speakers Bureau\, sharing her knowledge with other gardeners across the state. SUMMARY:Timber Rattlesnake Talk
DESCRIPTION:Date: January 24th\, 2023\nTime: 5:00pm-6:00pm \nPlease join us on Tuesday January 24th at the Massabesic Center to learn about one of New Hampshire’s most elusive snakes\, the state-endangered\, timber rattlesnake.  Wildlife Biologist Brendan Clifford from the NH Fish and Game Nongame and Endangered Wildlife Program will talk about the history of rattlesnakes in the state\, their biology\, and how Fish and Game monitors this often-misunderstood snake.  In addition\, we will learn about the status of New Hampshire’s rattlesnake population\, as well as the threats to its long-term persistence and some of the conservation efforts underway. You may even meet the Massabesic Center’s resident timber rattlesnake! \nBrendan has monitored the state’s rattlesnake population for the past 17 years.  He also works to monitor and protect populations of several other state-listed species including the eastern hognose snake\, northern black racer\, piping plover and least tern.

SUMMARY:Garden Insects: Friends and Foes
DESCRIPTION:Insects in the garden can be a problem – eating leaves\, piercing fruits\, or chewing roots. But some insects provide important benefits such as pollination and predation. We will search for insects\, explore identification techniques and resources\, learn how to discern friend from foe\, and gain skills to become an insect detective. A few tips on how to manage insect pests will also be discussed. This workshop will include some prework in preparation for the outdoor\, hands-on session.  Stay for an optional extension of the class until 7:00 p.m.\, which will include additional capture and ID techniques. \nLocation: Demonstration and Teaching Garden at NH Audubon’s Massabesic Center \n26 Audubon Way\, Auburn\, NH \nFee: $15/person; $10/NH Audubon member or UNH Extension volunteer \nREGISTER HERE \nAdvance registration required. DESCRIPTION:Tomato season is coming into full swing! In this workshop\, we’ll discuss the differences between the two major growth habits of tomato varieties: determinate and indeterminate. Understanding these differences will determine how best to manage them. SUMMARY:Loons on Lake Massabesic
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, July 8\, 6-7pm \nCost: Free \nFor many\, the haunting call of the loon is an important part of the New Hampshire lake experience. Often seen as a symbol of the northern wilderness\, loons are a beloved fixture on New Hampshire lakes\, and many lake goers enjoy watching them as they raise their young. However\, the breeding season can be a vulnerable time for loons—they face many threats\, both natural and anthropogenic\, while on our lakes. \nThis presentation by Caroline Hughes of the Loon Preservation Committee\, will focus on the biology and life history of loons\, the threats that loons face while on our lakes\, and the work that the Loon Preservation Committee’s staff and volunteers have performed since 1975 to help recover New Hampshire’s threatened loon population. \nWe will end with a discussion of the loons on Massabesic Lake\, the challenges that they have faced\, and the ways that program participants can assist with Massabesic loon monitoring. \nThis program is free of cost\, but participants must register in advance.  The presentation will take place indoors. \nStay up to date with the latest masking requirements by checking community Covid-19 transmission levels here.
