SUMMARY:NestWatch Volunteer Training: Bluebird Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:Learn about and get involved in a community science project to monitor field-nesting birds at NH Audubon’s Massabesic Center!  This workshop focuses on Eastern Bluebirds\, and will teach you identification\, natural history\, conservation status and how to collect data as a Bluebird Trail Monitor.  \nWe will begin in the classroom at 10am with a break for lunch (please bring your own lunch and water). After lunch\, we’ll head outside for the last hour to learn the trails and nest box locations\, clean out residual nest materials from last year\, and practice field identification of early season birds. \nNH Audubon Massabesic Center is home to almost 100 monitored nest boxes. SUMMARY:Common Nighthawks in New Hampshire with Rebecca Suomala
DESCRIPTION:Nighthawks are endangered in New Hampshire and declining throughout their range but we don’t know why. The dawn and dusk “peent” call of these birds was once a familiar sound in cities and towns throughout New Hampshire\, where they nested on flat\, pea stone gravel roofs and fed on insects attracted to city lights. NH Audubon initiated Project Nighthawk in 2007 to investigate the potential for restoring nesting nighthawks by placing simple gravel “nest patches” on flat rooftops. Join Sean O’Brien\, UNH Extension’s Home Horticulture Assistant Program Manager\, for a two-part workshop\, including an introduction to the benefits of raised bed gardens and an in-person\, hands-on session to build wooden raised bed gardens. You’ll go away with skills and knowledge about location\, material selection\, construction methods\, and how to grow various plants in raised beds. \nPart 1 \nThe first part of the workshop will be virtual\, and is available at no cost.  There is no registration limit for the webinar\, but you must sign up by May 1st.  Participation in the virtual introduction session is required in order to attend the second session. \nPart 2 \nThe in-person\, hands-on portion has a limited capacity of 20 participants. SUMMARY:The People and the Peregrines Behind the Incredible Ongoing Recovery of Falcons in NH with Chris Martin
DESCRIPTION:Decades of restoration efforts now make it possible trace generations of Peregrines from successful nest sites across the state. Sightings of banded falcons reveal their NH lineages as populations increase. The Manchester falcon nest site that we can see in NH Audubon’s nest cam has produced 70 chicks so far and over half of them have been spotted elsewhere as adults. Hear stories of individual falcons and individual people who monitor them. Through photos\, join Chris on a climb to band chicks – how does he get into the ledges and crevasses to measure and document them year after year? \n“It’s the unsolved mysteries that are important to me now\,” says Chris. “I’m getting multiple sightings of a color banded falcon spotted in Hampton who is the grandson of a Manchester bird via the Newburyport\, Plum Island bridge. Where is he now? Did he move on from Hampton? Is he part of a new breeding pair somewhere\, continuing his lineage?” \nChris Martin has been a raptor biologist for NH Audubon for more than three decades. His work focuses on recovery of the state’s endangered and threatened raptors in close collaboration with NH Fish & Game. SUMMARY:Garden Insects - Environmentally Conscious Pest Management
DESCRIPTION:As a gardener committed to sustainable practices\, it can be difficult knowing which insects are beneficial to your garden and which are harmful\, let alone the best way to help your plants survive the onslaught.  To learn the most environmentally-conscious\, and effective\, ways of gardening with insects\, join us for an introduction to our six-legged friends and foes.  During this in-person workshop\, we’ll discuss the basics of insect taxonomy and anatomy\, the factors behind what makes a bug good or bad\, identification tips\, and a review of common species that you’re likely to encounter here in New Hampshire.  We’ll also discuss integrated pest management concepts\, with a focus on non-chemical practices\, to help lessen the impacts of pests you may encounter at home. \nThis presentation will include a 45-minute indoor lecture\, followed by a 45-minute excursion to the gardens to look for insects and their signs in the Demonstration Gardens. DESCRIPTION:In the last 50 years\, scientists estimate that North America has lost roughly 3 billion birds\, meaning that there are only three quarters as many birds around as there used to be. New Hampshire Audubon has been tracking bird populations for almost as long\, and in our “State of the Birds” report we present a summary of how birds are doing here in the Granite State. Almost 300 species occur regularly here\, and this report outlines general population trends\, major threats facing birds and their habitats\, and some of the conservation strategies that might help them recover. The bad news is that birds are declining here as well. SUMMARY:Monarch Migration: How Radio-tagging Informs Conservation with Diane De Luca
DESCRIPTION:The last generation of monarchs travel south to overwinter in central Mexico. A journey close to 3000 miles. The placement of tiny Nanotags on migrating monarch butterflies is part of the larger Motus Project\, a global migration tracking system that NH Audubon and many partners are expanding in the Northeast. Tracking information helps determine phenology\, travel speeds\, and migration routes of the tagged monarchs. DESCRIPTION:Learn about and get involved in a community science project to monitor field-nesting birds at NH Audubon’s Massabesic Center! This workshop focuses on Eastern Bluebirds and Tree Swallows\, and will teach you identification\, natural history\, conservation status and how to collect data as a NestWatch Monitor. \nWe will begin in the classroom at 10am with a break for lunch (please bring your own lunch and water). After lunch\, we’ll head outside for the last hour to learn the trails and nest box locations\, clean out residual nest materials from last year\, and practice field identification of early season birds. \nNH Audubon Massabesic Center is home to almost 100 monitored nest boxes. NestWatch Monitors are expected to contribute one to two hours each week from April to August to record data in their designated sections. \nWorkshop participants are not required to become NestWatch Monitors; you can learn the process and take your new skills with you anywhere! \nPresenters:\nLogan Young\, NH Audubon Massabesic Center NestWatch Chapter Coordinator\nBob Krewson\, NH Audubon Bluebird Monitor Volunteer Leader \nCost:\nFree for NH Audubon members\n$5 for nonmembers \nRegistration Required by April 4\, 2024. \nIndoor presentation will take place indoors\, rain or shine.
