SUMMARY:Extending the Gardening Season Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Are you sad to see the summer end with the last of your vegetable garden bounty? Fear not! Fall can also be a great time to keep your gardens in production by extending the growing season. Whether you have already planted for this fall or want to plan for the next\, this workshop will cover what vegetables grow best in the fall\, how to protect your crops from frosts and freezes\, and how overwintering certain crops can take your growing season even further. \nThis workshop will include indoor and outdoor components and some hands-on planting and use of various row cover\, weather permitting. Dress for a short walk over grassy\, flat\, but uneven terrain. Bring garden gloves if you have them. \nAs a bonus\, check out our Annual Fall Plant Sale before or after the workshop! \nPresenter: Steph Sosinski is a Home Horticulture Program Manager with UNH Extension. \nCost:\n$10 for NH Audubon Members and UNH Extension Master Gardeners. \n$15 for non-members (Join or renew your membership today! Not sure of your membership status? Email our member services department or call (603) 224-9909 x310.) \nRegister here.\nRegistration required by September 7. \nFor accessibility requests\, please contact Massabesic Center Director\, Kimmie Whiteman via email. \nThis program is brought to you through an ongoing partnership between New Hampshire Audubon and University of New Hampshire Extension’s Master Gardener Program. SUMMARY:The State of New Hampshire’s Birds with Dr. Pamela Hunt
DESCRIPTION:In the last 50 years\, scientists estimate that North America has lost roughly 3 billion birds\, meaning that there are only three quarters as many birds around as there used to be. New Hampshire Audubon has been tracking bird populations for almost as long\, and in our “State of the Birds” report we present a summary of how birds are doing here in the Granite State. Almost 300 species occur regularly here\, and this report outlines general population trends\, major threats facing birds and their habitats\, and some of the conservation strategies that might help them recover. The bad news is that birds are declining here as well. The good news is that there are things we can do about it.  \nThis presentation is available in a hybrid format.  You are welcome to join us in-person at the Massabesic Center in Auburn\, or virtually via Zoom! Please indicate your preference in the ticket options below. \nThis program will take place rain or shine.  \nPresenter:\nDr. Pamela Hunt\, NH Audubon Senior Biologist for Avian Conservation  \nCost:\n$12 for NH Audubon members\n$15 for non-members (Join or renew your membership today! Not sure of your membership status? Email our member services department or call (603) 224-9909 x310.) \nRegistration Required by September 6\, 2023  \nAll ticket purchases will generate a printable ticket with a QR code. In-person check-in is done via sign-up list; please keep the printable ticket with QR code for your records.  \nZoom links will be sent to all virtual participants prior to the webinar. The link does not generate immediately\, so your patience is appreciated. Every effort will be made to record the presentation for registered attendees who miss the livestream.  \nFor accessibility requests\, please contact Massabesic Center Director\, Kimmie Whiteman\, at kwhiteman@nhaudubon.org.  \nThe NH Audubon Scientist Series features our Senior Biologists sharing their research and data in monthly presentations at Massabesic Center during 2023.  \n

SUMMARY:The People and the Peregrines Behind the Incredible Ongoing Recovery of Falcons in NH with Chris Martin
DESCRIPTION:Decades of restoration efforts now make it possible trace generations of Peregrines from successful nest sites across the state. Sightings of banded falcons reveal their NH lineages as populations increase. The Manchester falcon nest site that we can see in NH Audubon’s nest cam has produced 70 chicks so far and over half of them have been spotted elsewhere as adults. Hear stories of individual falcons and individual people who monitor them. Through photos\, join Chris on a climb to band chicks – how does he get into the ledges and crevasses to measure and document them year after year? \n“It’s the unsolved mysteries that are important to me now\,” says Chris. “I’m getting multiple sightings of a color banded falcon spotted in Hampton who is the grandson of a Manchester bird via the Newburyport\, Plum Island bridge. Where is he now? Did he move on from Hampton? Is he part of a new breeding pair somewhere\, continuing his lineage?” \nChris Martin has been a raptor biologist for NH Audubon for more than three decades. His work focuses on recovery of the state’s endangered and threatened raptors in close collaboration with NH Fish & Game. He recruits\, trains\, and supervises an enthusiastic group of NH Audubon volunteer field observers who monitor these species across the state. \nThis presentation is available in a hybrid format.  Join us in-person at the Massabesic Center in Auburn\, or virtually via Zoom! Please indicate your preference in the ticket options below. \nThis program will take place rain or shine.  \nPresenter:\nChris Martin\, NH Audubon Senior Biologist – Raptors  \nCost:\n$12 for NH Audubon members\n$15 for non-members (Join or renew your membership today! Not sure of your membership status? SUMMARY:Common Nighthawks in New Hampshire with Rebecca Suomala
DESCRIPTION:Nighthawks are endangered in New Hampshire and declining throughout their range but we don’t know why. The dawn and dusk “peent” call of these birds was once a familiar sound in cities and towns throughout New Hampshire\, where they nested on flat\, pea stone gravel roofs and fed on insects attracted to city lights. NH Audubon initiated Project Nighthawk in 2007 to investigate the potential for restoring nesting nighthawks by placing simple gravel “nest patches” on flat rooftops. During this presentation\, find out what we’ve learned about patches and nesting nighthawks\, and see photos of nests and chicks.  \nThis presentation is available in a hybrid format.  You are welcome to join us in-person at the Massabesic Center in Auburn\, or virtually via Zoom! Please indicate your preference in the ticket options below. \nThis program will take place rain or shine.  \nPresenter:\nRebecca Suomala\, NH Audubon Senior Scientist – Citizen Science Bird Data Project Leader  \nCost:\n$12 for NH Audubon members\n$15 for non-members (Become a member today!) \nRegistration Required by noon on April 27\, 2023  \nFor accessibility requests\, please contact Massabesic Center Director\, Kimmie Whiteman\, at kwhiteman@nhaudubon.org.  \nThe NH Audubon Scientist Series features our Senior Biologists sharing their research and data in monthly presentations at Massabesic Center during 2023.

SUMMARY:Loons on Lake Massabesic
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, July 8\, 6-7pm \nCost: Free \nFor many\, the haunting call of the loon is an important part of the New Hampshire lake experience. Often seen as a symbol of the northern wilderness\, loons are a beloved fixture on New Hampshire lakes\, and many lake goers enjoy watching them as they raise their young. However\, the breeding season can be a vulnerable time for loons—they face many threats\, both natural and anthropogenic\, while on our lakes. \nThis presentation by Caroline Hughes of the Loon Preservation Committee\, will focus on the biology and life history of loons\, the threats that loons face while on our lakes\, and the work that the Loon Preservation Committee’s staff and volunteers have performed since 1975 to help recover New Hampshire’s threatened loon population. \nWe will end with a discussion of the loons on Massabesic Lake\, the challenges that they have faced\, and the ways that program participants can assist with Massabesic loon monitoring. \nThis program is free of cost\, but participants must register in advance.  The presentation will take place indoors. \nStay up to date with the latest masking requirements by checking community Covid-19 transmission levels here. Our policies remain fluid in accordance with CDC guidelines. \nPhoto Credit: Kittie Wilson
