SUMMARY:NestWatch Volunteer Training: Bluebird Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:Learn about and get involved in a community science project to monitor field-nesting birds at NH Audubon’s Massabesic Center!  This workshop focuses on Eastern Bluebirds\, and will teach you identification\, natural history\, conservation status and how to collect data as a Bluebird Trail Monitor.  \nWe will begin in the classroom at 10am with a break for lunch (please bring your own lunch and water). After lunch\, we’ll head outside for the last hour to learn the trails and nest box locations\, clean out residual nest materials from last year\, and practice field identification of early season birds. \nNH Audubon Massabesic Center is home to almost 100 monitored nest boxes. Volunteer monitors are expected to contribute one to two hours each week from April to August to record data in their designated sections. \nWorkshop participants are not required to become volunteer monitors; you can learn the process and take your new skills with you anywhere! \nPresenters:\nLogan Young\, NH Audubon Massabesic Center NestWatch Chapter Coordinator\nBob Krewson\, NH Audubon Bluebird Monitor Volunteer Leader \nCost:\nFree for NH Audubon members\n$5 for non-members \nRegistration Required by March 30\, 2023 \nIndoor presentation will take place indoors\, rain or shine.  Outdoor portion will take place unless there is severe weather. Weather notifications will be made via email the day before.  Dress for the weather and be prepared to walk up to one mile over mostly flat\, but uneven grassy terrain. Bug spray and sunscreen are strongly recommended. \nFor reasonable accommodation requests\, please contact Massabesic Center Director\, Kimmie Whiteman\, at kwhiteman@nhaudubon.org. \nPhoto: Eastern Bluebird\, by Pam Hunt

SUMMARY:Rain Gardens - What are They and Why are They Important?
DESCRIPTION:April 13\, 5:00pm – 6:30pm \nA rain garden is a beautiful landscape feature built in a shallow depression designed to capture the rain. We’ll discuss other ways to capture the rain too\, and why that’s so important. As a bonus\, we’ll hear from Master Gardeners who have recently rehabbed the on-site rain garden! After the presentation\, we’ll head outside to see and further discuss the rain garden. \nPresenters:\nLisa Loosigian\, Soak Up the Rain NH Program Coordinator\, NHDES\nBrian McPherson\, UNH Extension Master Gardener\nBetty Jipson\, UNH Extension Master Gardener \nCost:\n$10 for NH Audubon members and Extension Master Gardeners\n$15 for non-members \nREGISTER HERE \nRegistration Required by April 10\, 2023 \nPresentation will take place indoors\, rain or shine.  Outdoor portion will take place unless there is heavy rain; come prepared to be outside for 10-15 minutes. \nFor reasonable accommodation requests\, please contact Massabesic Center Director\, Kimmie Whiteman\, at kwhiteman@nhaudubon.org. \nThis program is brought to you through an on-going partnership between New Hampshire Audubon and University of New Hampshire Extension’s Master Gardener Program. The Demonstration Gardens at NH Audubon’s Massabesic Center provide a place for sharing best practices in eco-friendly home and community gardening\, which enhance human health and well-being and wildlife habitat.  \nPhoto: Massabesic’s Rain Garden\, Brian McPherson

SUMMARY:Common Nighthawks in New Hampshire with Rebecca Suomala
DESCRIPTION:Nighthawks are endangered in New Hampshire and declining throughout their range but we don’t know why. The dawn and dusk “peent” call of these birds was once a familiar sound in cities and towns throughout New Hampshire\, where they nested on flat\, pea stone gravel roofs and fed on insects attracted to city lights. NH Audubon initiated Project Nighthawk in 2007 to investigate the potential for restoring nesting nighthawks by placing simple gravel “nest patches” on flat rooftops. During this presentation\, find out what we’ve learned about patches and nesting nighthawks\, and see photos of nests and chicks.  \nThis presentation is available in a hybrid format.  You are welcome to join us in-person at the Massabesic Center in Auburn\, or virtually via Zoom! Please indicate your preference in the ticket options below. \nThis program will take place rain or shine.  \nPresenter:\nRebecca Suomala\, NH Audubon Senior Scientist – Citizen Science Bird Data Project Leader  \nCost:\n$12 for NH Audubon members\n$15 for non-members (Become a member today!) \nRegistration Required by noon on April 27\, 2023  \nFor accessibility requests\, please contact Massabesic Center Director\, Kimmie Whiteman\, at kwhiteman@nhaudubon.org.  \nThe NH Audubon Scientist Series features our Senior Biologists sharing their research and data in monthly presentations at Massabesic Center during 2023.
