SUMMARY:Professional Development - Back to School Gardening\, Part 2
DESCRIPTION:Join Richard Hodges from ReTreeUs for the last of a two-part workshop to discover a novel way to grow schoolyard gardens. In these workshops\, we’ll talk about sheet mulching techniques\, succession planting\, and building organic matter with an easy-to-do method. You’ll also learn the basic considerations and steps for planning and starting a schoolyard vegetable garden. UNH-Extension Master Gardeners will be on site to talk specifics about pollinator gardens\, as well. \nIn this session\, we will harvest the crops that were planted in the “Back to School Garden” that we established in the spring session. We’ll transplant lettuce\, spinach and kale seedlings for the fall. We will install row cover\, with mini hoops\, to extend the growing season and we’ll discuss various approaches to fall gardens. \nAfter the workshop\, we’ll see these methods and more in action while touring the successful Teaching and Demonstration Garden\, which is maintained through a partnership between NH Audubon and UNH-Extension\, and provides the public with research-based\, sustainable gardening information and skills that benefit our environment for wildlife and for people. \nThis program will take place outdoors rain or shine. In the event of severe thunderstorms\, we will postpone.  Dress for a short walk in grassy uneven terrain\, with the intention to get hands-on with soil and plants. SUMMARY:Garden Insects - Environmentally Conscious Pest Management
DESCRIPTION:As a gardener committed to sustainable practices\, it can be difficult knowing which insects are beneficial to your garden and which are harmful\, let alone the best way to help your plants survive the onslaught.  To learn the most environmentally-conscious\, and effective\, ways of gardening with insects\, join us for an introduction to our six-legged friends and foes.  During this in-person workshop\, we’ll discuss the basics of insect taxonomy and anatomy\, the factors behind what makes a bug good or bad\, identification tips\, and a review of common species that you’re likely to encounter here in New Hampshire.  We’ll also discuss integrated pest management concepts\, with a focus on non-chemical practices\, to help lessen the impacts of pests you may encounter at home. \nThis presentation will include a 45-minute indoor lecture\, followed by a 45-minute excursion to the gardens to look for insects and their signs in the Demonstration Gardens. SUMMARY:A Garden Story Photography Exhibit-opening reception
DESCRIPTION:Kate Osgood’s photography documents A Garden Story – The pollinator garden at the McLane Center\, taking us through the life cycle of the garden\, from buds to birds and all of the changes\, and visitors\, in between. \nThere will be an artists reception on April 11\, from 4-6pm. \nA volunteer at the McLane pollinator garden\, Kate loves to document its beauty and changes through her photography. A lifelong lover of nature\, she has shown this love through her work as a landscape architect and through her photography. She studied botany at UNH and landscape architecture at UCLA and is licensed in both CA and NH. SUMMARY:Seed Starting for Home Gardeners
DESCRIPTION:January 25\, 2023 6:30pm – 8:00pm \nAttendees will learn the benefits and best practices for starting plants indoors from seeds and cuttings. Participants will learn about requirements for successful germination\, different growing methods and mediums\, light and temperature needs\, overcoming common problems\, hardening off seedlings for transplanting into the garden\, and best practices to ensure seedlings successfully grow into healthy mature plants. \nThis workshop is designed for beginning gardeners or gardeners who are new to raising plants from seeds\, but all experience levels are welcome to join and learn. \nPresenter:\nSarah Marcoux has been a UNH Extension Master Gardener since 2016. She is an active member of the Master Gardener Speakers Bureau\, sharing her knowledge with other gardeners across the state. Her special interests are herb gardens\, working with children and educational gardens. She also enjoys vegetable and pollinator gardens. \nCost: Free – Pre-registration is required. With little wind (hopefully)\, plenty of sun and lots of hands. \nPollinator Meadow Volunteer Request:  Plastic Removal\, Plastic Movement\, and Seed and Straw Spreading \nWednesday\, 2 November 2022\, 12-4pm \nRain Date: Friday\,  (Need dry weather for seed spreading): 4 November 2022 \n(Go\No Go will be sent out on Tuesday afternoon based on weather). \nActivities include: \n\nRemoval and movement of rocks and timbers to keep plastic down\nPulling of weeds which grew between the plastic\nMoving and securing plastic in new areas or folding it for storage and use elsewhere\nRaking out area to be seeded and removing roots\, litter\, and duff\nSpreading new native seed and sand mixture\nRolling and pressing in seeds for germination (soil compaction)\nSpreading straw\nDo the native seed germination dance 🙂\n\nIf you are interested and can attend either the day planned or the rain day\, please email T. Parker Schuerman. \nWhy a pollinator meadow? The demonstration pollinator meadow engages and educates local community members and collaborators in site preparation\, seeding\, and the ongoing maintenance of accessible fields planted with native grasses and wildflowers.  Bees and other pollinators are essential components of NH’s agricultural systems and natural ecosystems. These species rely on abundant sources of pollen and nectar for survival. By planting bee gardens and flowering meadows\, we can help support this critical natural resource. Workshops for landowners to learn about the mechanics of successfully establishing pollinator habitat on their property are planned and monitoring for pollinator usage of the meadows will engage citizen scientists of all ages.

He is a PhD student at Tufts University where he studies the population ecology of cellophane bees and runs the Tufts Pollinator Initiative\, an urban pollinator conservation and community outreach group. \nYou’ve probably heard “save the bees!” as news reports of insect declines flood the media. But do you know which bees need saving? Over 4000 species of bees inhabit North America\, and most of them don’t live in hives or make honey. In this lecture\, PhD student and New England bee expert Nick Dorian will teach you about the natural history and conservation of wild bees that call New England home. Together\, we’ll examine closely their varied lifestyles\, their habitat needs\, and their intricate relationships with flowering plants and other insects.
