DESCRIPTION:This presentation by Advanced Master Gardener Doris Buco is for gardeners at any level interested in adding herbs to a new or existing garden space or containers. Attendees will learn about the propagation and growth habits of readily available herbs and some that are more difficult to find. An overview of the environmental conditions needed to grow herbs will also be included. SUMMARY:Easy to Grow Vegetables
DESCRIPTION:Join UNH Extension Master Gardener Maureen Sinclair to learn how to start growing vegetables without getting overwhelmed. What are the “easy” vegetables to grow? How do you pick healthy plants from the garden center? What should we be observing in our gardens? All these questions and many more will be answered to help you maximize early successes\, learn by doing\, and have fun growing vegetables. \nLogistics: \nThis presentation will take place both indoors and outdoors at the Massabesic Center. We’ll start with a lecture in the main conference room and then head out to the garden\, weather-permitting\, to observe vegetable garden practices in action. SUMMARY:An Introduction to Identifying and Photographing NH Butterflies (Webinar)
DESCRIPTION:This presentation is geared toward new butterfly enthusiasts who are interested in learning more about butterfly biology and behavior. It will include a discussion of how to identify common New Hampshire butterflies using key physical and behavioral characteristics. The presentation will also cover the basics of butterfly photography – particularly using cell phones – which can be an important tool for accurate identification. The session will be presented by Mark Ellingwood\, a retired wildlife biologist who enjoys observing and photographing butterflies in his spare time. \nRegister here. \nThis training is part of a series of three webinars hosted by the NH Butterfly Monitoring Network\, a collaborative effort led by NH Fish & Game Department to engage volunteers in counting and identifying butterflies across New Hampshire. The series will provide information on butterflies in New Hampshire\, butterfly identification\, photographing butterflies\, and how to submit your observations to support the NH Butterfly Monitoring Network. The Nature Lab is located down the hall. \nWheelchair accessible\, paved parking is limited near the building and food truck vendors\, but much of the remaining parking lot is an uneven dirt surface. Overflow parking is available on the left side of Silk Farm Road. Please note that the garden terrain is comprised of uneven brick or grassy surfaces. The nearby Pollinator Meadow Restoration Trail is wheelchair and stroller friendly\, but navigating the vendor booths indoors may be a tight squeeze at times. DESCRIPTION:Visit the Massabesic Center to meet the team who are outstanding in their fields and know all the dirt. No need to herb your enthusiasm! Bring your pressing questions about plants\, find your inner peas\, discover inspiration for laying down roots at home\, or just dig the blooms! \nOur volunteer team of UNH Extension Master Gardeners like to have fun and teach others about what it takes to create and maintain the luscious\, wildlife-friendly gardens on the grounds. These informal meet and greet events are the perfect way to learn about getting involved in volunteer gardening opportunities with NH Audubon\, and about ways you can duplicate our gardens in your own backyard\, whether you have an acre or a patio pot. \nThe beautiful gardens on site include pollinator and bird-friendly plants\, a rain garden space\, vegetable gardens\, raised beds\, and more. As an ongoing partnership between New Hampshire Audubon and University of New Hampshire Extension’s Master Gardener Program\, Massabesic’s Demonstration Gardens provide a place for sharing best practices in eco-friendly home and community gardening\, which enhance human health and well-being and wildlife habitat. \nDress for walking in short grass on flat but uneven terrain. Sunscreen and personal insect repellant are recommended. Building hours (and bathroom access) are 11am to 5pm\, but come early before the heat of the day chases the gardeners away. Visit the gift shop and meet our animal ambassadors after you spend your morning exploring the gardens. Consider packing a lunch to enjoy at one of the picnic tables surrounding the gardens. SUMMARY:Become a Volunteer Guide: NH Butterfly Monitoring Network
DESCRIPTION:The NH Butterfly Monitoring Network (NHBMN) is a collaborative effort\, led by NH Fish & Game and UNH Extension\, to engage volunteers in counting and identifying butterflies across New Hampshire. Data collected by volunteers can contribute to our understanding of long-term trends in butterfly populations and inform conservation actions for both common and declining species. An important part of this work involves promoting volunteer participation in July Butterfly Counts\, currently held in 7 locations across the state each year. There is growing interest from volunteers in helping at these fun\, day-long counts\, but we need volunteers to lead groups to increase our capacity and help us collect more useful data. \nJoin us for this training to learn more about becoming a Volunteer Guide for the NH Butterfly Monitoring Network’s July Butterfly Counts. We’ll provide an overview of the survey process\, describe the role of a Volunteer Guide\, and share tips for leading a group outdoors. Participants will also be introduced to documenting butterfly species and best practices for data collection. Following the training\, we’ll connect you with the coordinator of a local count circle who will provide opportunities for field-based learning and will coordinate with you as a Volunteer Guide for the July Butterfly Count. DESCRIPTION:Join Richard Hodges from ReTreeUs for the last of a two-part workshop to discover a novel way to grow schoolyard gardens. In these workshops\, we’ll talk about sheet mulching techniques\, succession planting\, and building organic matter with an easy-to-do method. You’ll also learn the basic considerations and steps for planning and starting a schoolyard vegetable garden. UNH-Extension Master Gardeners will be on site to talk specifics about pollinator gardens\, as well. \nIn this session\, we will harvest the crops that were planted in the “Back to School Garden” that we established in the spring session. We’ll transplant lettuce\, spinach and kale seedlings for the fall. SUMMARY:Garden Insects - Environmentally Conscious Pest Management
DESCRIPTION:As a gardener committed to sustainable practices\, it can be difficult knowing which insects are beneficial to your garden and which are harmful\, let alone the best way to help your plants survive the onslaught.  To learn the most environmentally-conscious\, and effective\, ways of gardening with insects\, join us for an introduction to our six-legged friends and foes.  During this in-person workshop\, we’ll discuss the basics of insect taxonomy and anatomy\, the factors behind what makes a bug good or bad\, identification tips\, and a review of common species that you’re likely to encounter here in New Hampshire.  We’ll also discuss integrated pest management concepts\, with a focus on non-chemical practices\, to help lessen the impacts of pests you may encounter at home. \nThis presentation will include a 45-minute indoor lecture\, followed by a 45-minute excursion to the gardens to look for insects and their signs in the Demonstration Gardens. SUMMARY:A Garden Story Photography Exhibit-opening reception
DESCRIPTION:Kate Osgood’s photography documents A Garden Story – The pollinator garden at the McLane Center\, taking us through the life cycle of the garden\, from buds to birds and all of the changes\, and visitors\, in between. \nThere will be an artists reception on April 11\, from 4-6pm. \nA volunteer at the McLane pollinator garden\, Kate loves to document its beauty and changes through her photography. A lifelong lover of nature\, she has shown this love through her work as a landscape architect and through her photography. She studied botany at UNH and landscape architecture at UCLA and is licensed in both CA and NH. SUMMARY:NH Butterfly Monitoring Trainings - Hairstreaks and Blues
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the New Hampshire Butterfly Monitoring Trainings! \nNew Hampshire Audubon is excited to partner with New Hampshire Fish and Game (NHFG) to collect long-term data on butterflies in the Concord region and beyond. Sightings will provide valuable data on how species ranges are changing over time. Your data will help support butterfly conservation across the state. \nThis partnership group will host a series of butterfly ID trainings over the next few months – both online and in the field. Butterfly experts from across the state will be our guides. This is an amazing opportunity to learn and participate in butterfly conservation. \nDuring the series you will receive information about future training webinars and field days that will be offered in your area\, including Butterfly Surveys that will take place at 6 locations across the state. The online and field sessions will provide you with an eye-opening experience to connect with species you may not have noticed in the past. No matter what your skill level is\, you are welcome to join us. Together we can help track New Hampshire’s butterflies and make a difference in their conservation. \nOnline training sessions are scheduled for the following dates: \nFebruary 22 at 6:30pm: Mark Ellingwood will provide basic information on butterfly biology and introduce us to some of the more common species you may see in your neighborhoods.
