You’ll also learn the basic considerations and steps for planning and starting a schoolyard vegetable garden. \nIn Part 1 of the workshop\, we’ll get hands-on (virtually) with the “sheet mulching” practice we utilize in school gardens in the spring to prevent weeds and build soil. We will learn about direct-sowing crops that grow well over the summer with minimal maintenance while discussing best practices for school gardens. \nAfter the workshop\, we’ll provide information for you to tour the successful Teaching and Demonstration Garden\, which is maintained through a partnership between NH Audubon and UNH-Extension\, and provides the public with research-based\, sustainable gardening information and skills that benefit our environment for wildlife and for people. \nCost: $10 for NH Audubon members $15 for non-members (Join or renew your membership today! Not sure of your membership status? Email our member services department or call (603) 224-9909 x310.)  \nAdvance registration required for Part 1 by July 10th at 12pm. \nIf you will be also attending Part 2\, register via the Part 2 link. Your webinar access will be generated automatically\, free of charge.  Please don’t pay twice! \nAll ticket purchases will generate a printable ticket with a QR code. In-person check-in is done via sign-up list; please keep the printable ticket with QR code for your records.   \nZoom links will be sent to all virtual participants prior to the webinar. The link does not generate immediately\, so your patience is appreciated. Every effort will be made to record the presentation for registered attendees who miss the livestream.    \nPayPal Disclaimer:  \nOur ticket system utilizes NH Audubon’s PayPal account to facilitate sales. Registrants are not required to make a PayPal account to check out; a “guest” option is available. \nFor accessibility requests\, please contact Massabesic Center Director\, Kimmie Whiteman\, at kwhiteman@nhaudubon.org. \nDon’t forget to also sign up for Part 2 on August 30th\, 4:00pm – 6:00pm! \nPhoto: Image from ReTreeUs showing a healthy garden grown with sheet-mulching techniques. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Garden Insects - Environmentally Conscious Pest Management
DESCRIPTION:As a gardener committed to sustainable practices\, it can be difficult knowing which insects are beneficial to your garden and which are harmful\, let alone the best way to help your plants survive the onslaught.  To learn the most environmentally-conscious\, and effective\, ways of gardening with insects\, join us for an introduction to our six-legged friends and foes.  During this in-person workshop\, we’ll discuss the basics of insect taxonomy and anatomy\, the factors behind what makes a bug good or bad\, identification tips\, and a review of common species that you’re likely to encounter here in New Hampshire.  We’ll also discuss integrated pest management concepts\, with a focus on non-chemical practices\, to help lessen the impacts of pests you may encounter at home. \nThis presentation will include a 45-minute indoor lecture\, followed by a 45-minute excursion to the gardens to look for insects and their signs in the Demonstration Gardens. In the event of inclement weather\, the entire presentation will take place indoors. \nCome prepared for a short walk over flat\, uneven grassy terrain.  Sunscreen and bug-repellant (for the humans!) are recommended. \nFor accessibility accommodations\, please contact Massabesic Center Director\, Kimmie Whiteman\, at kwhiteman@nhaudubon.org. \nPresenter:\nKimmie Whiteman\, NH Audubon Massabesic Center Director \nCost:\n$10 for NH Audubon members and UNH-Extension Master Gardeners$15 for non-members (Join or renew your membership today! SUMMARY:Concord NH Butterfly Survey 2023
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our first annual NH Butterfly Survey! \nNew Hampshire Audubon is partnering with New Hampshire Fish and Game (NHFG) to collect long-term data on butterflies in the Concord region and beyond. Sightings will provide valuable data on how species ranges are changing over time. Your data will help support butterfly conservation across the state. \nNHFG and partners will go in the field to learn more about the butterflies that call New Hampshire home. Our series of online and field training sessions wrapped up and it’s time for the butterfly survey. All are welcome for this amazing opportunity to learn and participate in butterfly conservation. \nJoin us as we conduct the first annual Concord NH Butterfly Survey. These surveys are part of a nationwide effort to track butterflies through the North American Butterfly Association. These surveys provide insight into how habitat and weather changes affect butterfly populations. Together we can help track New Hampshire’s butterflies and make a difference in their conservation. \nMeet at McLane Center in Concord. \nQuestions? Please contact Diane De Luca.
